1. David de Gea – 7

Made some excellent saves, most notably against Didier Drogba and Eden Hazard, but could nothing about the former’s header that gave the Blues the lead.

2. Rafael – 6

Looked a little frantic at the start and earned a yellow card for a foul on Hazard early on, but looked good going forward again and was bizarrely tasked with marking the striker for corners.

12. Chris Smalling – 6

Drafted back into the side and looked solid enough, although could not deal with the physicality of Drogba.

5. Marcos Rojo – 4

Not a good display from the Argentine who looks lost as a centre-back and that is just adding to the woes of Louis van Gaal’s men at the bacl.

3. Luke Shaw – 5

Showed at times that he is a real force going forward, but Branislav Ivanovic had the better of the 19-year-old for much of the game.

31. Marouane Fellaini – 8

Great decision by van Gaal to play the Belgium international who gave his best performance in a United shirt to date and kept Cesc Fabregas quiet.

17. Daley Blind – 5

Looked a lot less assured than he has been in recent times and the Netherlands international did not give a great display.

8. Juan  Mata (Wilson, 67′) – 5

Still struggling to find his place and Mata would have been keen to prove the West Londoners wrong for selling him, but couldn’t manage it.

11. Adnan Januzaj – 6

Still shows real promise and although his final ball needs a lot of work the 19-year-old could develop into a top-class talent.

20. Robin van Persie – 7

Was not the van Persie of old, but with both Radamel Falcao and Wayne Rooney absent the 31-year-old stepped up in the end with a goal.

7. Angel di Maria – 6

Seemed a little jaded having been rushed back to the starting XI after injury and di Maria was far from his best, but did provide the assist for the goal.

Substitutions:

49. James Wilson – 5

Was not quite like when Wilson scored against Hull City last season as the youngster struggled to make an impact on the game.

Manager – Louis van Gaal  – 6

Made some shrewd decisions such as putting Fellaini in midfield and playing a compact defence, but it nearly didn’t pay off.
