The Gunners made the surprise move to sign Danny Welbeck from Manchester United in a £16m deal on deadline day in the summer, and it could be that Wenger has his eye on another Old Trafford raid for the winter.

Arsenal may also raid Newcastle United once more after signing French right-back Mathieu Debuchy from the Magpies in pre-season, while key players from Manchester City, Southampton and Aston Villa also appear to be on the club’s agenda.

The five Premier League players who could be set for moves to the Emirates Stadium this January as follows:

1) Cheick Tiote (Newcastle)

Arsenal are known to be tracking a tough-tackling defensive midfielder, and could make Newcastle’s Ivorian powerhouse Cheick Tiote one of their top targets in that position, though Serie A side Napoli could provide competition for his signature as he may be able to move for a fee in the region of £16m this January.

2) Chris Smalling (Manchester United)

Having raided United for the £16m signing of Welbeck in the summer, Arsenal could be preparing to go back to Old Trafford again as they look to snap up versatile England defender Chris Smalling to enhance their depth at the back.

3) Ron Vlaar (Aston Villa)

A player looking likely to leave Aston Villa in the near future, Arsenal are keeping tabs on the situation of experienced Dutch centre-back Ron Vlaar as they continue to pursue signings to replace Thomas Vermaelen after his departure to Barcelona in the summer.

4) James Milner (Manchester City)

Another useful midfield player who could be available, Manchester City’s James Milner is a surprise target for the Gunners as they ponder improving their squad on the cheap this January.

5) Morgan Schneiderlin (Southampton)

A highly impressive performer for high-flying Southampton this season, Arsenal are keen to follow up their summer signing of youngster Calum Chambers with a move for French midfield enforcer Morgan Schneiderlin in the next transfer window.
