Five Players Who Could Solve Liverpool’s Defensive Nightmare In January, Including Arsenal Target And AC Milan Star

The Reds have been struggling horribly at the back in 2014/15…

Liverpool have longstanding defensive problems, having conceded over 50 goals last season and getting even worse this time around, despite brining in three new defenders during the summer. However, without Luis Suarez to cover for it at the other end, Brendan Rodgers is now going to need to make some defensive signings to sort out the problem.

Here are five players who could help solve the crisis if they were targeted in January…

5) Neto, Fiorentina

The Brazilian keeper has been on Liverpool’s radar for a while now, and according to the Daily Star, the Reds could make the move in January. The keeper would be an ideal replacement for the faltering Simon Mignolet.

4) Joel Matip, Schalke

The Cameroonian can play at either centre-back or defensive midfield, and would add solidity to the centre of the park for Liverpool. His arrival could also mean that Steven Gerrard doesn’t have to play in the holding role any longer – although we’re not actually sure he has the legs to play anywhere else right now.

3) Ignazio Abate, AC Milan

The Italian right-back has been linked in recent weeks, and would be a replacement for the ageing Glen Johnson and the inexperienced Javier Manquillo. He could also be available on the cheap, as his contract expires in the summer.

2) Joel Ward, Crystal Palace

If Brendan Rodgers decides to not follow through with his interest in Abate, another option would be Crystal Palace right-back Joel Ward. The Englishman has been impressing at Selhurst Park, and there are rumours that he could make a move to Merseyside.

1) Fabian Schar, Basel

A part of the Basel team that beat Liverpool earlier in the season, he has recently said that he would like a move abroad. Linked heavily to Arsenal, Liverpool could do plenty worse than put in a bid for the talented young Swiss.
