The Blues may be on the lookout for new players upfront due to Loic Remy missing much of this season through injury, while Didier Drogba cannot be considered a long-term option for the club at the age of 36.

Doumbia’s fine form in the Champions League will no doubt have caught the eye of several top clubs this season, with the Ivory Coast international recently scoring in his side’s surprise away win at Manchester City.

Liverpool were initially linked as the favourites to snap him up, but they will now face competition from their Premier League rivals for his signature as they seek to bring in an upgrade on the misfiring Mario Balotelli.

The Reds have been in something of a crisis this season after losing Luis Suarez to Barcelona in the summer, with Balotelli struggling to fill his boots and with Daniel Sturridge spending most of this campaign so far out injured.

Doumbia could be a good solution to the club’s problems for a reasonable price if he does end up moving this January.
