The skillful Argentine has been linked with top European clubs on several occasions in the past, with United now believed to be frontrunners in the chase for his signature.

The Red Devils invested heavily in new attacking players this summer, with Louis van Gaal keen to continue his spending next season as he plans a revamp of the first-team squad at Old Trafford.

Gaitan could be a top class addition for United, with the 26-year-old showing himself to be one of the best players in the Portuguese top flight in the last few years, and with his buy-out clause with the club set to be reduced.

The player’s current clause stands at £30m, but this will fall to just £23.7m by next summer, which is when United are expected to make their move to snap him up.

Gaitan has made 187 appearances for Benfica, and helped the club to the league title last season, as well as to the Europa League final for two seasons in a row.
