The Red Devils have not made the most convincing start to the season under Louis van Gaal, who spent heavily on a host of new players this summer, with Herrera among those failing to make an impression so far.

The Spaniard, 25, has only made five Premier League appearances for the club so far this season, and was recently left out of big games against Chelsea, Manchester City and the win over Crystal Palace at Old Trafford.

Van Gaal now has his eye on three possible replacements in that part of the pitch, with these big names believed to be in the club’s sights to replace Herrera already:

1) Sami Khedira (Real Madrid)

Strongly linked with Arsenal in recent times, it could be that Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira will be heading to United this January to help the club strengthen in that problem position of central midfield. The German international is undoubtedly one of the best in the world in his position and would make an excellent purchase.

2) Kevin Strootman (AS Roma)

Another target on United’s shortlist is AS Roma playmaker Kevin Strootman, whose superb displays in recent times for both Roma and previous club PSV have persuaded van Gaal to make him one of his priority transfer targets in the middle of the park, though he could prove expensive.

3) Arturo Vidal (Juventus)

Finally, United have been linked again with Juventus star Arturo Vidal, who has established himself as a truly world class box-to-box midfield player in Serie A and for the Chilean national team in recent years, though a proposed summer move to Old Trafford never materialised.
