Six Excellent Arsenal Alternatives If They Can’t Sign £47m World Cup Winner Mats Hummels

The Gunners must regret not signing a centre-back in the summer…

Arsenal have reportedly been told that it will cost them £47 million to sign Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels. This high price tag is thought to be a stumbling block for manager Arsene Wenger.

So, if the Gunners can’t afford the World Cup winner, who could they get instead? Here are six centre-backs the North London club have been linked to at slightly cheaper prices…

Ron Vlaar, Aston Villa

The Dutchman has been linked to a move ever since the World Cup, and for good reason. He is a solid defender, and is available relatively cheaply as he is in the final year of his contract. Villa may be willing to let him go in January before he leaves for nothing in the summer. The 29-year-old has been talked up by his agent.

Aymeric Laporte, Athletic Bilbao

The 20-year-old has been linked to a move to the Emirates by the Metro. He would still be expensive at £34 million, but even so that is nowhere near the £47 million quoted for Mats Hummels.

Matija Nastasic, Manchester City

Another youngster at just 21-years-old, Nastasic has been offered to the Gunners for £5 million according to Goal.com. This would be a steal for a defender who was a key part of the Sky Blues’ title winning team just two seasons ago.

Chris Smalling, Manchester United

Perhaps less popular with Arsenal fans as he’s coming from Old Trafford, Smalling would still be a good signing for the North London club. He would be available for £10 million if you listen to the Express.

Gerard Pique, Barcelona

Even though 27-year old recently claimed that he isn’t leaving the Catalan club, his lack of game time under new manager Luis Enrique could still force him out. Arsenal are apparently interested, claims the Mirror.

Winston Reid, West Ham

The New Zealander has been an integral part of the Hammers’ brilliant start to the season, and he could be available in January. He is in the final year of his contract and is yet to announce anything about a new deal. Arsene Wenger could be ready to pounce, according to the Express.
