Liverpool defender Glen Johnson has accepted an offer to join Serie A title challengers AS Roma, according to The Metro.

The 30-year-old England international, who has been at Anfield since signing from Portsmouth in 2009, has seven months left to run on his current contract with the Reds.

The Merseyside outfit apparently offered him a new deal, which included a 50 per cent decrease in his weekly wage.

Johnson, who has started five Premier League games this season, has reportedly rejected those terms, after being presented with a better package by Roma.

Roma are now expected to complete Johnson’s signing in the January transfer window, with Rudi Garcia’s side willing to pay a small fee to Liverpool for a player who would otherwise be available for free in the summer.

Should Johnson’s proposed transfer go through, he will move from a team with a rather shaky defence to a side with one of the finest rearguards in Europe.

Liverpool have conceded 65 goals in their last 49 Premier League matches – an average of 1.33 per game. Meanwhile, Roma have let in just 31 goals in 49 Serie A fixtures – 0.63 per game.

Roma’s current backline already includes one Englishman. Former Arsenal and Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole moved to the Stadio Olimpico in July.
