Manchester United News And Rumour Roundup: Welbeck Reveals Why He Joined Arsenal, Ronaldo Return And Another Centre-Back Targeted

Thursday’s biggest stories for the Red Devils.

Louis van Gaal prepared to pay record fee to bring Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels to Manchester United

The Dutchman is keen to bring in defensive recruitment in the New Year having primarily focuses on attack with his signings over the summer.

Van Gaal would be prepared to sanction a British record fee for a defender to bring Hummels to Old Trafford, reports the Guardian.

The record currently stands at £32m, which Manchester City paid FC Porto for Eliaquim Mangala in the last transfer window.

Red Devils are also considering a move for AC Milan centre-back Adil Rami

Support at the back is certainly a priority for van Gaal and Rami is the latest defender to be linked with a move to the Theatre of Dreams, according to the Daily Star.

The France international joined Milan in January having initially been on-loan from Valencia, but is no longer in manager Filippo Inzaghi’s first team plans.

Van Gaal wants a new central defender having failed to successfully replace Rio Ferdinand or Nemanja Vidic as yet.

United could sell Angel di Maria in order to fund a move for either Gareth Bale or Cristiano Ronaldo

Despite only buying di Maria for a British record £59.7m over the summer the club are willing to sell him to Paris Saint-Germain in January.

According to the Daily Express this is because they want to fund a deal for either Bale or Ronaldo of Real Madrid.

The Welshman would cost a world record £90m, whilst there is also hope the Portugal captain would return to the side he spent six years with.

Danny Welbeck says he had to leave Man United for Arsenal after being played out of position

It could be an emotional game for the forward on Saturday as he faces his boyhood club for the first time since leaving for the Gunners in a £16m deal.

Welbeck came through the ranks at Old Trafford, but felt he was being played on the wing too often and finally had to leave to realise his role as a striker.

“Over the past year or so, I started to think about what’s best for me. At the time I was playing on the left wing a lot and in a 4–4-2, which is very difficult for me because I can’t make an impact on the game,” the England international was quoted by the Manchester Evening News.

Nani has not given up on a return to the Theatre of Dreams

The Portugal international left the 13-time Premier League champions over the summer to join former club Sporting Lisbon on-loan.

Nani was not in van Gaal’s first team plans at the time, but the 28-year-old has been doing well in the Portuguese capital and has not given up on a return to England.

“It is a possibility that I might come back to Manchester United. Why not?” the winger was quoted by the Manchester Evening News.
