Joe Bernstein’s XI:

Bernstein wouldn’t start summer signings Luke Shaw or Ander Herrera in his best United XI, despite the fact they cost around £60m between them.

He’d also start Phil Jones in a remarkably unnatural left-back role, and Antonio Valencia, Angel di Maria and Wayne Rooney behind Robin van Persie in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Should di Maria surely not be starting on the left, and Rooney in at no.10…?

Ian Ladyman’s XI:

If the last XI wasn’t strange enough, this one takes the biscuit.

Ladyman selects Shaw at centre-back, and Evans on on the left. He then, like Bernstein, selects Rooney on the left and di Maria through the centre.

We can only hope there’s something wrong with the infographic generator at the Daily Mail?

Simon Jones’ XI:

Thankfully, this one makes an awful lot more sense. Just.

Jones wants to deploy a 3-4-1-2, with the three natural centre-backs in the side, and Valencia and Herrera (strangely) as wing-backs.

Carrick and Blind then form an excellent platform for Di Maria to pull the strings behind Rooney and van Persie.
