Ronaldo Arsenal – Wenger’s big regret

The Gunners have been in poor form at the start of this season, though they eased the pressure on their under-fire boss last night with a convincing 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund to secure qualification to the knockout stages of the Champions League.

Still, with the victory being married by an injury to club captain Mikel Arteta, Wenger’s side are worryingly short of options in the defensive midfield department at the moment, and will surely be looking to address that when the transfer window opens in the new year.

Defence is also a concern for the Gunners, and it is being reported that these are the four players the north Londoners have in mind to come in to the club this winter:

1) Grzegorz Krychowiak (Sevilla)

Linked with a £20m move to Arsenal this January, Sevilla’s Polish midfielder Grzegorz Krychowiak has caught the eye with some commanding midfield displays in La Liga this season, and could make the ideal replacement for the injured Arteta in that crucial part of the pitch.

2) James McCarthy (Everton)

A superb Premier League player, James McCarthy is well established at this level and could finally make a move to a bigger club after attracting the interest of elite sides in the past. Everton won’t want to sell to a rival, but Arsenal are believed to be looking at the Republic of Ireland international as an option.

3) Petr Cech (Chelsea)

One of the best goalkeepers in the world, Chelsea star Petr Cech is also one of Arsenal’s top targets this winter as it looks like he may be allowed to leave Stamford Bridge in his quest for regular first-team football. The Blues would rather sell abroad, but Wenger hopes to lure the Czech Republic shot-stopper to the Emirates Stadium.

4) Tyrone Mings (Ipswich Town)

Finally, in a detailed report from the Daily Mirror, Ipswich Town youngster Tyrone Mings is linked as a top option for Arsenal in defence, with the versatile defender excelling in the Championship this season to attract interest from a number of top flight clubs.
