10) Marco Simone

Another former Milan star, Marco Simone scored 23 goals in 39 Champions League matches, with a ratio of 0.59 per game.

9) Mario Gomez

Also with 0.59 per game, Fiorentina striker Mario Gomez makes it onto this list for his fine goalscoring exploits at previous club Bayern Munich, for whom he scored 26 goals in just 44 Champions League games.

7) Cristiano Ronaldo

Only in 7th place, Real Madrid  star Cristiano Ronaldo is surprisingly low with 71 goals in 108 games, a still impressive record of 0.66 per game.

6) Edinson Cavani

A highly prolific striker, Edinson Cavani has made his mark on this competition despite few appearances, scoring 14 in 21 games, or 0.67 a game.

5) George Weah

Another AC Milan legend, George Weah was a star of this competition with 11 goals in just 16 games, a ratio of 0.69 per game.

4) Roberto Soldado

An extremely poor signing by Tottenham Hotspur, but Roberto Soldado looked a great striker once upon a time, netting an impressive 16 goals in 23 games for previous club Valencia, or 0.70 per game.

3) Seydou Doumbia

New to the competition, CSKA Moscow striker Seydou Doumbia has been in fine form with 10 goals in 14 games, a ratio of 0.71 per game.

2) Ruud van Nistelrooy

A Manchester United legend, Ruud van Nistelrooy was extremely clinical at his peak, and scored 56 goals in 73 games with a ratio of 0.77 per game.

1) Lionel Messi

All the more impressive for the number of goals and games, Barcelona star Lionel Messi is top of another list as he holds a record of 0.81 goals per game in the Champions League, having scored 74 in just 91 appearances, including two in finals.
