The Welshman called time on his playing career at the end of last season to move into coaching, taking charge of United in a caretaker role towards the end of last season.

The 41-year-old now works as assistant manager at Old Trafford under van Gaal, though he could be tempted to make the move into management if Championship side Wigan do come calling.

The Latics only recently appointed Malky Mackay as their new boss in a highly controversial move, with the former Cardiff City man under investigation for the use of sexist, racist and homophobic language in a series of leaked text messages.

Wigan have a clause in Mackay’s contract allowing them to terminate the deal if he is found guilty, and Giggs is thought to be one of their top candidates to come in if this is the case.

Another former United star Nicky Butt would also join as Giggs’ assistant at the DW Stadium, in what would be an intriguing move.
