The Dutchman has made a real impression since taking over at Old Trafford, bringing in the likes of Angel Di Maria, Radamel Falcao and more in a bid to bring the glory days back to the club after a real slump under David Moyes last season.

Although the Red Devils won’t be able to afford all of these names below, it is thought that these are the ten most high-profile players on van Gaal’s wish list at the moment, with a further £150m raid on Di Maria’s old club Real Madrid a possibility.

10) Karim Benzema (Real Madrid)

Supposedly for sale for just £40m, Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema is being linked with Manchester United as well as other big clubs, having been touted as a possible signing for the Red Devils on a number of occasions in the past. The Frenchman is undoubtedly world class and could make an ideal replacement for Robin van Persie if he leaves the club.

9) Gareth Bale (Real Madrid)

In a somewhat surprise move, £90m-rated Gareth Bale has also been linked with Manchester United if Angel Di Maria rejoins the Spanish giants next summer. It may be unlikely to pan out like that, but the Welshman has been repeatedly linked with the Red Devils in recent times after suggestions that he is falling out of favour with Carlo Ancelotti.

8) Arturo Vidal (Juventus)

Recent claims suggest this move could finally happen next summer – Juventus are reportedly ready to sell Arturo Vidal to Manchester United after the Red Devils pursued the Chilean international for so long this year. A top class midfield player, this could be an excellent move in the transfer market.

7) Hugo Lloris (Tottenham Hotspur)

With the possibility that David de Gea could become a top target for Real Madrid, Manchester United would supposedly make Tottenham Hotspur’s star goalkeeper Hugo Lloris one of their top targets to come in as a replacement. The French shot-stopper has been outstanding in his time at White Hart Lane and could cost around £25m.

6) Miranda (Atletico Madrid)

Supposedly a top January target, Manchester United could shore up their defence with the addition of world class Atletico Madrid centre-back Miranda, who has been a major part of the club’s susprise success in the last year.

5) Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund)

It is thought that Manchester United are looking the likelier to complete the signing of Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels, despite interest from Arsenal. The German World Cup winner is valued at around £32m and the Red Devils are more willing to pay that than their rivals.

4) Juan Cuadrado (Fiorentina)

Another big-name summer target still on Louis van Gaal’s radar, Fiorentina winger Juan Cuadrado is being tipped to make the move to Old Trafford in January in what would be another highly exciting deal to bolster the side’s attacking options.

3) Koke (Atletico Madrid)

Although Chelsea and Manchester City are tipped as favourites to sign the £48m-rated Atletico Madrid playmaker Koke, United are also mentioned as suitors for the talented young Spaniard, who looks like exactly what they need in midfield as a long-term replacement for Paul Scholes.

2) Kevin Strootman (AS Roma)

A huge transfer deal that may already be in place, Kevin Strootman has supposedly agreed to leave AS Roma for Manchester United in the near future and become the latest exciting addition to the Red Devils’ midfield.

1) Edinson Cavani (Paris Saint-Germain)

With Radamel Falcao struggling at Manchester United, recent reports suggest that the club will not take up the chance to sign him permanently and instead move for Paris Saint-Germain hit-man Edinson Cavani to solve their issues upfront. The world class Uruguayan would be another expensive purchase, but is seemingly high on van Gaal’s priorities.
