The 21-year-old is one of the most impressive young talents coming out of Brazilian football at the moment, and is widely expected to move to a big European club this January.

Hailed by many as ‘the next Kaka’, Silva could be the answer to Arsenal’s midfield problems as they look set to be without injured pair Mikel Arteta and Jack Wilshere for some time, with the latter possibly set to miss most of the season as he targets a March return.

Silva could be a great option for the Gunners in that part of the pitch, and £12m will seem a very reasonable fee to pay for a player with such talent and potential, though it remains to be seen if he would choose a move to the Emirates Stadium over offers from Old Trafford or the Bernabeu.

One factor that could work in Arsenal’s favour is the possibility of regular first-team football, something which may be harder for United and Real to guarantee at this stage, with so many other big names in their squads.
