Gunners manager Arsene Wenger is a big admirer of Dybala and wants the Argentine at the Emirates Stadium as early as January – although that seems unlikely.

Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini is keen to keep hold of his prized asset for as long as possible, but is realistic enough to realise the starlet will probably leave in the near future.

Dybala is regarded as one of the finest young talents in world football and has been likened to fellow countryman Sergio Aguero for his deadliness in front of goal.

The attacker has six Serie A strikes in 13 appearances this season and Zamparini is such a big fan that he says the youngster will one day be better than Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Wenger is well respected when it comes to developing emerging talent, but the Frenchman is also known as a frugal operator in the transfer market and Dybala’s fee seems extortionate compared to what the 65-year-old usually spends.

In fact the £33m being quoted for the relatively unproven South American has only been exceeded twice during his time at the club, with the £35m and £42.4m purchases of Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil respectively.
