The Gunners have not had the best of starts to the season so far, though their form has picked up somewhat in the last few games, and this has led Wenger to seek a number of new additions to strengthen different areas of his squad.

Although attacking signings such as Alexis Sanchez and Danny Welbeck from the summer have been largely successful, the team is certainly still lacking in the other half of the pitch, with defence and defensive midfield clearly a priority for the north London giants this winter.

Read on to see the five players who could be heading to the Emirates Stadium this January if Arsenal’s aims go according to plan:

1) Morgan Schneiderlin (Southampton)

With Mikel Arteta and Jack Wilshere out injured, it’s no surprise to see Arsenal linked with a midfielder, and Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin looks to be one of Arsene Wenger’s top targets in a £15m move, though Manchester United and Liverpool are also said to be watching the Frenchman.

2) Petr Cech (Chelsea)

Despite some contrasting stories relating to this rumour, it has been suggested that Chelsea would be ready to sell backup goalkeeper Petr Cech to Arsenal this January in a surprise move. The Gunners could do with an upgrade in goal, and Cech’s availability has alerted a number of top clubs.

3) James McCarthy (Everton)

Although Everton have warned Arsenal off bidding for Irish midfielder James McCarthy, it is thought that the in-form Toffees man is another high priority target for the Gunners in the middle of the park this winter.

4) Moussa Sissoko (Newcastle United)

Recent reports also suggest that Arsenal are interested in another raid on Newcastle United this January. Having signed Mathieu Debuchy from the Magpies in the summer, the Gunners are now after French midfielder Moussa Sissoko as an option in the middle of the park, with Alan Pardew conceding that big clubs are likely to come in for one of his best players.

5) Ron Vlaar (Aston Villa)

Arsenal are also plotting an £8m raid on Aston Villa for one of their best players this winter. Dutch centre-back Ron Vlaar is reportedly stalling on signing a new contract at Villa Park, attracting strong interest from the Gunners as well as from Manchester United.
