Liverpool Ratings For Champions League Draw Against Basel – Steven Gerrard heroics not enough to rescue the Reds

CaughtOffside rates the Liverpool players for their performances against Basel…

Liverpool 1-1 Basel – Steven Gerrard scored a superb free-kick, but it wasn’t enough for the ten-man Reds to make the Champions League knockout stage, as Fabian Frei’s strike put the Swiss side through.

Liverpool fell behind mid-way through the first-half, and although Gerrard brought them level, they were unable to force the winner they required, while Lazar Markovic’s red card only dampened their evening.

Read the full Liverpool ratings below:

GK) Simon Mignolet – 6

Made a fantastic one-handed save late on, but his kicking was near atrocious at times, and he needs to work on his distribution.

RB) Glen Johnson – 5

Another difficult night for the Liverpool full-back, who got forward as best as he could, but was caught out too easily once again.

LB) Jose Enrique – 4

Looked shaky, having been caught in possession on more than one occasion. Was withdrawn at half-time.

CB) Martin Skrtel – 6

Became a make-shift centre forward in the final moments, and threw everything he could into the game to no avail.

CB) Dejan Lovren – 5

A difficult night for the Croatian, who hasn’t started a game in several weeks. Failed to close Frei down ahead of the goal.

CM) Lucas Leiva – 5

Did his normal job sitting in front of the back four, but offered little going forward. Booked for a horribly timed challenge, and replaced with 15 minutes remaining.

CM)Jordan Henderson – 6

Helped drive Liverpool forward in the final ten minutes, but supporters will be frustrated that their vice captain wasn’t able to produce much earlier in the evening.

CM) Joe Allen – 5

Failed to influence the game moving forward, and you have to wonder why Rodgers left the likes of Coutinho and Lallana on the bench in favour of the Welshman.

AM) Raheem Sterling – 6

Caused Basel problems, particularly in the latter stages, and did a better job than Rickie Lambert of leading the line when he was pushed further forward in the second-half.

AM) Steven Gerrard – 8

Scored a brilliant free-kick and drove forward relentlessly, but unlike in 2004, his personal heroics were not enough to carry Liverpool over the line.

ST) Rickie Lambert – 5

Struggled to involve himself in the game in the first-half, often looking isolated and frustrated. Subbed at half-time.

Manager: Brendan Rodgers – 4

A strange team selection – choosing Lucas, Allen and Henderson when a win was required. Left Lallana on the bench and saw his substitute sent off after twenty minutes.

Subs:

1) Lazar Markovic – 3 – Looked lively when he first game on, and while he will rightly debate his sending off, he was naive in throwing out a stray arm when there was no need to so.

2) Alberto Moreno – 6 – Pushed forward from left back, and proved why he should have been picked ahead of Enrique in the first place. His crossing needs to improve however.

3) Philippe Coutinho – 6 – Showed real commitment to the cause after coming on late in the game, but his lack of confidence showed.
