Speculation suggests that Louis van Gaal is keeping an eye on a number of big-name targets this January as he seeks to continue improving his midfield despite so many big signings in that department during the summer.

The likes of Ander Herrera, Daley Blind and Angel Di Maria all arrived at Old Trafford this season, but they could be joined by further additions in the near future as United ponder improvements on some of their under-performing stars.

If reports are to be believed, these are the players United hope to swoop for this January:

1) Enzo Perez (Benfica)

According to the Daily Star, Manchester United are now expected to step up their interest in Benfica midfielder Enzo Perez, as Valencia have pulled out of the running for the Argentine. Valued at around £25m, the 28-year-old could be a superb addition for the Red Devils in the middle of the park.

2) Nicolas Gaitan (Benfica)

With recent speculation that Angel Di Maria is unhappy at United and looking for a move to Paris Saint-Germain, United could be lining up Nicolas Gaitan in a double raid on Benfica, according to the Daily Mirror. and there’s no doubt the Argentine winger would be an ideal like-for-like replacement for the former Real Madrid man in that position.
