City were paired with Barcelona in the last 16 for the second successive season in yesterday’s draw – and that means Uruguay striker Suarez will return to these shores in February for the first time since his infamous World Cup biting incident prompted his controversial £75million move from Liverpool.

Barca dumped City out of the competition last season with a 4-1 aggregate score, though the club have warned the Catalan giants that they are better prepared to compete with them this time around.

City’s Sporting Director Txiki Begiristain said: “We now have plenty of confidence because we have made it to the next round, after beating Bayern and then Roma away.

“We are confident to recover players and get them fit and to arrive at this game in a good moment. We have really improved our squad and feel we are more solid, stronger than last season.

“We have the same quality up front but are more solid behind and that gives us confidence for the run.”
