Arsenal’s main targets to solve their leaky defence this January may have been revealed, with recent reports suggesting that Arsene Wenger has a shortlist of four priority signings to make when the transfer window opens this winter.

It is no secret that the Gunners have been unconvincing at the back for much of this season, and it seems that the club will now move to rectify this when the transfer market re-opens for business, even if many feel this should have been dealt with during the summer.

It remains to be seen if Arsenal will try to sign just one or maybe more of these four players, but read on to see Wenger’s list of top centre-back targets:

1) Virgil van Dijk (Celtic)

After some highly impressive form with Celtic, Dutch international defender Virgil van Dijk is believed to be one of many Arsenal targets to come in this January, with the 23-year-old looking like an outstanding talent ready for a move to a bigger club and a more competitive league.

2) Benedikt Howedes (Schalke)

Another top class defensive signing on the agenda this winter could be the £15m addition of Schalke’s versatile stopper Benedikt Howedes, who has also found himself linked with a move to Manchester United in recent times.

3) Fabian Schar (FC Basel)

Another player who looks ready to make the move up in his career is highly-rated young Basel defender Fabian Schar, who has long been linked as one of Arsenal’s top defensive targets, as well as a number of other clubs’.

4) Winston Reid (West Ham United)

A player who could cost as much as £20m, Winston Reid of West Ham United is another top defender who could do a job for Arsenal this season, though his contract situation at Upton Park has also seen him linked with Liverpool and Manchester United.
