What Arsenal Need In January And Who They Should Sign With Khedira Not The Solution, But Maybe Hummels Is

It is a notoriously difficult time to sign players and Arsenal in particular are well known for being frugal in the market, but some purchases are certainly needed for Arsene Wenger.

Here’s what the Gunners need and who they should sign.

Centre-back

Everyone but Wenger seemingly realised that heading into the 2014/15 season with just six recognised first team defenders was asking for trouble and sure enough it has proven to be an issue.

Injuries to Mathieu Debuchy and Laurent Koscielny has seen Nacho Monreal playing in central defence and and Hector Bellerin called up from the Under-21s.

Per Mertesacker is also looking increasingly unreliable and therefore a better partner for Koscielny in the middle would be useful. Here are some viable options.

Mats Hummels, Borussia Dortmund (Daily Express)

The 2014 World Cup winner would certainly be an expensive option, but with Hummels publicly criticising his Dortmund teammates for their poor Bundesliga form the captain could be open to leaving the Signal Iduna Park.

Winston Reid, West Ham United (Mirror)

Has been a key part of the Hammers’ success so far this term and is also out of contract come the end of the season. However, West Ham boss Sam Allardyce has said it will cost at least £20m to convince him to part with Reid.

Fabian Schar, FC Basel (Daily Express)

The youngest option and also the cheapest, although Schar is less likely to be able to come straight in and become a firm fixture in the starting XI. However, at 22-years-old the Switzerland international could be a good option for the future.

Defensive midfielder

The attack is pretty well stocked at the Emirates Stadium currently with new signings Alexis Sanchez and Danny Welbeck settling in well alongside the more established Santi Cazorla and Olivier Giroud.

There has been much talk of Real Madrid contract rebel Sami Khedira heading to North London, but the Germany international is more of a box-to-box midfielder than holding player.

Wenger needs someone to sit in front of the back four and protect them and here are some decent options.

Lars Bender, Bayer Leverkusen (Metro)

The Frenchman has long had his eye on this 25-year-old, but tempting Bender away from Leverkusen has proven to be elusive thus far and more of an effort may need to be made to convince the German to leave.

Grzegorz Krychowiak, Sevilla (Daily Express)

Impressed at Reims last term and has kicked on once more this time around since a summer switch to La Liga. Despite the fact Krychowiak has only been in Seville for six months if the price is right the Spanish club will sell.

Morgan Schneiderlin, Southampton (Mirror)

Perhaps the best option would be this France international however, with Schneiderlin already having plenty of experience in English football and a desire to leave St Mary’s for pastures new.
