What Liverpool Need In January & Who They Should Sign – Chelsea Reject & Serie A Striker Gonzalo Higuain Top Of The List

Liverpool’s summer signings have failed to impress so far, and Brendan Rodgers desperately needs to bring reinforcements to Anfield in January…

Despite a stellar showing last season, Liverpool have endured a woeful start to the new campaign; both domestically and in Europe.

With Brendan Rodgers’ summer signings failing to hit the mark so far, the Merseyside manager will be looking to add further reinforcements to his struggling side.

Striker

With Daniel Sturridge seemingly in a state of perpetual injury, the club are in dire need of another striker. Summer signing Mario Balotelli has been an unmitigated disaster since his £16m switch from Serie A, and Rickie Lambert and Fabio Borini just don’t seem like Premier League standard.

Plenty of top quality forwards have been linked with a move to Anfield, but January is a notoriously difficult time to bring new faces in. There may be a few options available to Brendan Rodgers however…

Jackson Martinez – FC Porto

The Porto hit-man has been in fantastic form of late, and his goalscoring exploits have drawn interest from a number of top teams. He has already admitted that he is expecting to leave the Portuguese club in the near future, so if Liverpool are willing to meet their valuation of him then he could be on his way to Anfield.

Wilfried Bony – Swansea City

The Ivorian looked to be on his way out of Swansea this summer, with Liverpool heavily linked with the powerful forward. He remained in Wales however, and his once again been prolific in the Premier League.

Gonzalo Higuain – Napoli

The former Real Madrid star had an excellent first season in Serie A, but rumours that he has become unsettled in Italy have been backed up by his dramatic dip in form. Liverpool could be set to take advantage of the unhappy Argentine’s situation, and he could prove to be the perfect addition to a side seriously lacking goals.

Goalkeeper

The other area that Liverpool badly need to strengthen is between the sticks, with the form of Simon Mignolet taking a nosedive this season. The Belgian’s mistakes during the last campaign went unnoticed on occasion, with the Reds relying on goals from Luis Suarez to outscore their opponent. With the Uruguayan now at Barcelona however, and the goals not flowing nearly as freely, errors at the back are far more problematic.

Brendan Rodgers has opted to drop Mignolet in favour of second choice shot-stopper Brad Jones, but the American also looks a long way from Premier League standard.

Neto – Fiorentina

The Serie A star has looked solid for Fiorentina this season, and with his contract set to expire in the summer he could be available extremely cheaply in January. He may not be the top quality Mignolet replacement that Liverpool need, but he is certainly a very gettable target.

Kiko Casilla – Espanyol

Just heading into his prime, Casilla recently made his first appearance for the Spain national team. Liverpool are thought to be in pole position to sign the shot-stopper, although they do face competition from a number of other top teams.

Petr Cech – Chelsea

An unlikely one, as Jose Mourinho is unlikely to want to sell or loan to a side he sees as a direct rival. Reports have suggested that Liverpool are attempting to bring the former Blues No.1 to Anfield on loan in January however, and if a move proves possible then he is arguably the best option for Brendan Rodgers.
