With Liverpool’s season teetering on the brink of disaster you have to feel Brendan Rodgers will respond to their ridiculous drop in form and league standing with a fire sale of the deadwood and under-performing stars of his first team squad.
CaughtOffside looks at the ten players who could be facing an imminent Anfield exit in 2015.
Kolo Touré
The Ivory Coast defender is out of contract at the end of this season and it’s likely this will be his last in Liverpool too.
However, with some impressive displays this season when called upon, you wouldn’t be surprised if Toure could somehow still earn a one year extension.
Glen Johnson
Another defender out of contract in July, Johnson’s time at Anfield seems destined to end in 2015 as he’s been linked with numerous clubs he is can sign with on a Bosman.
The right back could even be rocking up with fellow jet-setting full back Ashley Cole in Serie A with a host of Italian clubs linked with Johnson’s signature.
Jon Flanagan
Flanagan may be out of contract in 2015 but you have to feel he’ll get at least a one year extension to his current deal in the coming months.
The youngster was afforded plenty of game time last season and if he can shake off his current injury concerns you can expect the local lad to fight his way back into contention.
Brad Jones
Jones is also out of contract in the summer and the Australian’s jig is surely up.
Despite displacing Mignolet for the moment in the first team, Jones hardly fills you with confidence and a more consistent, experienced and robust back-up keeper will no doubt be on Brendan Rodgers’ wishlist come the summer.
Mario Balotelli
Where oh where do we start with Mario?
It was billed as either genius or insanity when Rodgers decided to pay £16 million for the enigmatic Italian and it currently seems to be edging more towards the latter with Balotelli lacking form in all competitions, a paltry goal scoring record and once again controversy arising and impacting his playing time.Simon Mignolet
After being displaced by Brad Jones and with seemingly no immediate prospect of return to the starting XI, Mignolet’s time is looking up at Anfield.
There was much hope for the Belgian when he signed from Sunderland a season ago, but despite an impressive show-reel of saves on his Liverpool record Mignolet has never been quite up to scratch. Would probably be let go if a new number one was found.Sebastien Coates
The Uruguayan was signed on the coat-tails of Luis Suarez with a recommendation from the striker sealing a move to Anfield for the young defender.
However, Coates has never established himself as a first choice centre-back and has generally been untrusted except in a last resort – he could be allowed to leave to make way for a more reliable back-up with a real prospect of a first team future.
Jose Enrique
The left back only really established himself for one season at Liverpool before being replaced and falling down the pecking order.
His bit part role has seen him make just three appearances this season in the Premier League as Alberto Moreno, Javier Manquillo and generally ever other defender is preferred to him.
Joe Allen
The Welsh midfielder followed Rodgers from Swansea but their relationship could come to an end in the summer with Allen hardly impressing or proving himself to be the central midfielder that Liverpool need to play alongside and eventually supersede Steven Gerrard.
Fabio Borini
Borini’s time at Anfield is something of a conundrum considering he was signed by Rodgers in 2012, was sent out on loan last season and now can only get game time every other week for a grand total of five minutes.
There was talk of another loan move this past summer that Borini reportedly rejected to try and fight for a place at Liverpool but the Italian will surely decide to cut his losses as soon as possible with no clear way for him to make a success of himself on Merseyside.
