This list consists of those rumours invented by the national press and, yes, re-reported by us. Everyone loves a good transfer rumour, but we have to admit that we fell for some of these ourselves.

With stars from Manchester United, Liverpool and Real Madrid all included, see if you agree with our rankings:

10) Fernando Torres (AC Milan to Liverpool)

This couldn’t happen could it? Torres burned a lot of bridges when he left Liverpool for Chelsea in 2011, and many Reds fans have relished in the downturn of his career. Nonetheless, the Daily Star believe it really could happen.

9) Lukas Podolski (Arsenal to Tottenham Hotspur)

Arsenal forward Lukas Podolski took to Twitter to dismiss transfer speculation linking him with a £10m move to Tottenham Hotspur. The German World Cup winner tweeted: “Hell will freeze over before this transfer would happen.”

8) Yaya Toure (Manchester City to Liverpool)

Remember Yaya Toure and his agent stirring up trouble for literally no reason in the summer? The birthday cake and all that… well some papers, including the Metro, added one and one together and got 17, as well as a move to Liverpool.

7) Ronaldinho (Atletico Mineiro to Stoke City, QPR or Basingstoke Town)

Before the Brazilian icon completed his move to Mexican giants Querétaro, he was linked with a shock switch from his native country to England, with sides including Stoke, QPR and non-league minnows Basingstoke all reportedly interested.

6) Karim Benzema (Real Madrid to Liverpool)

Karim Benzema is Madrid’s second top scorer this season, behind Ronaldo, and is key to the way the play, leading the line and allowing the Portuguese star, along with Gareth Bale and James Rodriguez to use the space behind him. And yet according to the Daily Star, he’s already a Liverpool player.

5) Raheem Sterling (Liverpool to Chelsea)

Following the departure of Luis Suarez and the injury to Daniel Sturridge, the winger has quickly established himself as Liverpool’s key man. And yet according to the Daily Express, the Reds are prepared to let him go to a major domestic rival.

4) Gareth Bale (Real Madrid to Manchester United)

Gareth Bale, the world’s most expensive player, as made an excellent start to life in Madrid. He scored the winning goal in the Copa del Rey against Barcelona, as well as the crucial second in both the Champions League and Club World Cup final. There is no chance that he’s off to United for any price.

3) Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid to Manchester United)

Equally ridiculous are the suggestions that Madrid would be willing to sell their star man. There is still no player in the world, with the exception of Lionel Messi, even in the same league as Ronaldo. He will not be returning to Old Trafford for several years yet, sorry Daily Mail.

2) Lionel Messi (Barcelona to Chelsea)

You think Ronaldo leaving Madrid is bad? Try Lionel Messi to Chelsea for £200m – yes £200m! The reports were based on Cesc Fabregas’ comments about his former Barcelona teammate, but there is no way anyone could afford that price with FFP now firmly in play.

1) Angel di Maria, Paul Pogba, Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Cristiano Ronaldo (all to PSG)

We have a winner here, from the Daily Star. PSG, done by FFP this year, are about to spend… probably £450m to land these five players. If that’s not a crazy transfer rumour, then who knows what is!
