Following Sunday’s 0-0 draw with Tottenham at White Hart Lane, the Red Devils sit third in the Premier League table, ten points behind leaders Chelsea, and seven behind neighbours Manchester City.

But United are now unbeaten in nine league matches, and Van Gaal will be hoping that some smart recruitment next month will continue his side’s rapid improvement.

Reports in the Daily Star are linking the Old Trafford side with moves for Borussia Dortmund centre back Mats Hummels, Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman, and talented youngster Martin Odegaard.

Reports from Germany indicate that World Cup winner Hummels has grown frustrated with life at Borussia Dortmund after their dreadful start to the season, which sees them stranded in the relegation zone.

The Star also understands that Strootman wants out of Roma if a top club come calling. The defensive midfielder has already been linked with a £30m switch, and it’s expected Van Gaal will step up his interest in the New Year.

Youngster Odegaard could become a third signing, with the Norwegian set to join United for training. The 16-year-old was close to joining Bayern Munich, however, he is now thought to be keen on training with Van Gaal’s side ahead of making a decision on his next club.
