Odegaard looks set to make a decision about his next club ahead of the January transfer window, and it is now United and City’s turn to try and impress the youngster.

He has already been to visit Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea and they are joined by European giants Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Ajax in their interest in landing his signature.

However, he has been advised by figures in his native Norway to snub the bigger names in the Premier League and link up with Southampton instead.

There are genuine concerns about how much playing time he would receive at United and City, where as Southampton have a proved track record of giving youth a chance and developing them into world class players.

However, it remains to be seen as to whether the south coast club can convince him to snub a move to one of the Manchester sides.
