Liverpool Roundup: Gerrard’s Shock Departure And Next Club, Reds Favourites To Sign Shaqiri And Rodgers’ Transfer Plans

Friday’s biggest stories for the Reds.

Captain Steven Gerrard will leave Liverpool at the end of the season

There has been some shocking news that has rocked Anfield as Gerrard makes the decision to leave his boyhood club in the summer.

As reported by the Daily Express the 34-year-old is getting ready to bid farewell to the Kop after deciding he didn’t want to be spending more and more time on the bench under manager Brendan Rodgers.

It will bring to an end a hugely successful career for Gerrard on Merseyside, during which time he has won two FA Cups, three League Cups, the UEFA Cup and Champions League.

MLS beckons for Gerrard now as LA Galaxy lead the way

With the ability to speak with foreign clubs as of New Year’s Day it seems the next move for the skipper has already been decided as three American sides close in.

According to the Liverpool Echo out of respect for the Reds Gerrard will not stay in England and it seems a switch to the US looks to be the most likely option for the midfielder.

The Englishman will join former international teammates Jermain Defoe and Frank Lampard in MLS, with the duo playing for Toronto FC and New York City FC respectively.

Permanent offer made for Bayern Munich star Xherdan Shaqiri

Although it seems one major star will be leaving the Merseysiders soon there could be another arriving as the Reds assume pole position in the race to sign Shaqiri, according to the Metro.

Rodgers has made a permanent offer to sign the 23-year-old, which Bayern are more keen on agreeing to than the loan bids from Serie A duo Inter Milan and Juventus.

The Northern Irishman is a long-term admirer of Shaqiri, who has cut a frustrated figure at the Allianz Arena in recent times due to a lack of game time.

Rodgers has no complaints after 2-2 draw with Leicester City

Despite assuming control during their Premier League clash with Leicester on Thursday, not for the first time this term it was thrown away and a two goal lead was reduced to finish in a 2-2 draw.

Gerrard gave his side a 2-0 advantage thanks to two penalties, but David Nugent and Jeffrey Schlupp both scored to complete the comeback and Rodgers says his side got what they deserved.

“I didn’t think we played well in all honesty, and I thought Leicester played very well. We found ourselves two-nil up in a game we didn’t deserve to be, we still created chances but it was always a dangerous game,” the 41-year-old was quoted by FourFourTwo.

Transfer activity will be limited in January admits Rodgers

Although his side are currently struggling to recreate the success of last campaign the manager says there won’t be big changes to his squad over the next month.

Rodgers would prefer to help new signings such as Emre Can, Adam Lallana and Lazar Markovic bed in than enter the transfer market to try and solve his team’s issues.

“There won’t be much activity. We have bought a lot of players in the summer who are beginning to adapt to our way of working at Liverpool. My job is to coach the players who are here and make the most of their talent. I don’t want to stockpile players,” the former Swansea City man was quoted by the Independent.
