24) Anderson – Utterly pointless. Was dreadful in the League Cup humiliation against MK Dons and has offered very little else.

23) Anders Lindegaard – Louis van Gaal doesn’t appear to be entirely trusting of the Danish reserve goalkeeper and it would be no surprise to see him replaced in January.

22) Rafael – Brazilian right back Rafael has largely been on the sidelines this season and needs to act soon to save his Old Trafford future.

21) James Wilson – The young striker’s pace as a substitute has been a decent asset, but he still has plenty to learn as a footballer.

20) Adnan Januzaj – The Belgian youngster has not quite lived up to the potential shown last season and could perhaps do with a loan spell away from Old Trafford.

19) Daley Blind – It isn’t the fault of the Dutch international, but having spent much of his time at Old Trafford so far on the treatment table, he still has plenty to prove.

18) Darren Fletcher – Louis van Gaal has named experienced Scot Darren Fletcher as his ‘third captain’, but the midfielder has yet to offer too much on the pitch this season.

17) Chris Smalling – Other than his Manchester derby meltdown, Chris Smalling is yet to really live up to expectations at Old Trafford during the current campaign.

16) Luke Shaw – The world’s most expensive teenager has seen his start to life at Old Trafford disrupted by injury, but he is clearly a player with huge potential.

15) Ander Herrera – Spanish midfielder Herrera has actually impressed when played by van Gaal, but seems to be out of favour with the Dutchman.

14) Marouane Fellaini – Has grown into his role in Louis van Gaal’s midfield as the season has gone on and is now probably first choice.

13) Jonny Evans – Another player whose season has been disrupted by injury, centre back Jonny Evans needs to prove that he can stay fit for a period of time.

12) Paddy McNair – Teenage defender Paddy McNair has been excellent when called upon and proven himself capable of contributing to the first team squad.

11) Radamel Falcao – Three Premier League goals and a couple of promising displays do not yet constitute value for money from the Colombian.

10) Marcos Rojo – Injuries again. Rojo has looked reasonable enough when he has played, but needs to get a run of games under his belt.

9) Robin van Persie – A few too many anonymous performances from van Persie this season have hampered his overall contribution to the team.

8) Phil Jones – Another United defender, another player whose season has been ravaged by injury. Good when in the team, however.

7) Ashley Young – He had seemed likely to be leaving Old Trafford, but Ashley Young has been surprisingly excellent in an unfamiliar wing back role for van Gaal.

6) Angel di Maria – The British record signing has been fantastic when he has played but, once again, the Argentine has spent too much time on the sidelines.

5) Antonio Valencia – Another winger converted into a wing back, Valencia has been excellent down the right flank for United.

4) Juan Mata – Is finally starting to look worth the huge fee paid to Chelsea and has made the number ten role his own.

3) Michael Carrick – Missed the start of the season through injury, but midfielder Michael Carrick has been superb and clearly impressed his new manager.

2) Wayne Rooney – Handing the captaincy to Wayne Rooney has proven to be an inspired choice, with the England international now excelling in a new midfield role.

1) David de Gea – A clear first choice, goalkeeper David de Gea has been exceptional all season and comfortably the club’s best player so far.
