10) Emile Heskey (Unattached to Bolton)

Okay this one might have happened in December, but there weren’t many people unhappy to see the big man back in English football. The former Liverpool, Wigan and Aston Villa man even scored on his debut, at the age of 36.

9) Lewis Macleod (Rangers to Brentford, £1m)

Big news due to the emphasis it places on Rangers’ current financial struggles. The 20-year-old’s move across the board didn’t go down well with supporters, who were unhappy to see one of the brightest prospects depart cheaply.

8) John Swift (Chelsea to Swindon Town, Loan)

A member of Chelsea’s talented youth side, after a failed spell with Championship Rotherham earlier in the season, he’ll get a fresh chance at League One Swindon. The 19-year-old midfielder made his debut at the weekend.

7) Jack Dunn, Lloyd Jones and Kevin Stewart (Liverpool to Cheltenham, Loan)

Talking of youngsters going out on loan, Liverpool have shipped out a trio of starlets to Cheltenham. Midfielder Dunn, 20, and defenders Jones, 19, and Stewart, 21, will all be helping the League Two side.

6) Ryan Shotton (Stoke City to Derby County, Undisclosed)

Once billed as the successor to Rory Delap as the Stoke’s long throw expert, Shotton’s career has somewhat stalled in recent years, during loan spells with a succession of Championship clubs. He’ll be hoping to do better at Derby.

5) Sylvan Ebanks-Blake (Unattached to Preston)

Remember Ebanks-Blake? The former Manchester United, Plymouth, Wolves and England U21 striker was once expected to be the next big thing, but it’s never really happened for him, and he’ll be in League One this season.

4) Darren Bent (Aston Villa to Derby County, Loan)

Aston Villa are preparing to loan out Darren Bent again, after moderate success during the first half of the season with Brighton. The former England man scored twice for the Seagulls, and will now try and fire Country to the Premier League.

3) Matt Grimes (Exeter City to Swansea City, £1.75m)

The 19-year-old England youth team international has plenty of potential, and Swansea might have just pulled off a bargain by signing him from League Two Exeter. The midfielder scored five goals in 58 games for his former club.

2) Eljero Elia (Werder Bremen to Southampton, Loan)

Southampton have tied up a surprise deal for the Netherlands international, who has also played for Juventus and Hamburg in his club career. The 27-year-old winger will be aiming to boost the Saints top four hopes.

1) Fernando Torres (Chelsea to AC Milan, to Atletico Madrid, Loan)

Fernando Torres is back where it all started. After a great spell with Liverpool, and several forgettable years with Chelsea and – briefly – AC Milan – the Spaniard has rejoined former club Atletico Madrid as he looks to reignite his career.
