How would Gunners fans feel about the arrival of Carvalho?

1. The Portuguese is a powerful midfielder

Arsenal have outstanding talent in midfield but are missing strength

The talent of the side’s midfield is undoubted, with Mesut Ozil, Santi Cazorla and Aaron Ramsey all excellent on the ball. However, they are missing a powerful midfielder, capable on the ball and off it to break up play. The likes of Patrick Viera have not been replaced and Wenger should be targeting such a player.

2. Wenger has a history of nurturing power-house midfielders

Former Arsenal power-house Patrick Vieira has not been replaced

Vieira and Emmanuel Petit were dominant during their time with the club, largely due to their physical presence – an attribute almost entirely missing from the current Gunners squad. Wenger needs a player with both physicality and ability – Carvalho could be the answer.

3. Just 22 years old

Arsenal star Aaron Ramsey, 24, has flourished under Wenger

At 22 years old the Sporting midfielder has a long career ahead, and is at the perfect age for Wenger to nurture the youngster into a key player at the Emirates Stadium.

4. Can play in defence and midfield

Sanchez has lit up the Premier League but Wenger needs more than an attacking threat

Arsenal are more than capable of creating and scoring plenty of goals, particularly with latest signing Alexis Sanchez lighting up the Premier League – however, concerns remain with their lack of intimidation in the middle of the pitch. Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny are often called into question, and Carvalho would add significant protection to the attacking side.

5. Full international

Carvalho was part of the Portugal squad at the 2014 World Cup, making his debut in the competition in the 2-2 draw against the United States, and played the full 90 minutes against Ghana in the next game. A young midfielder with great experience already who could handle the pressure of a move to the Premier League.
