Manchester United Draw Up Three Man £150m Transfer Shortlist

Louis van Gaal and Ed Woodward set to discuss targets in Friday meeting.

Manchester United chief executive Ed Woodward is set to sanction another £150 million spending spree from his manager Louis van Gaal, report the Mirror, with the two set to meet on Friday in a bid to finalise their transfer market plans for both the January window and the end of the season.

The report suggests that United could look to make one marquee signing during the January transfer window in a bid to bolster their squad for the rest of the campaign, before adding to that with another two eye-catching captures in the summer. These are the three players that are suggested to top van Gaal’s wishlist:

Nathaniel Clyne (Southampton)

The first player on the list is Southampton right back Nathaniel Clyne, the England international who has been one of the most impressive performers in Ronald Koeman’s overachieving Saints side so far this season. The report suggests that Clyne is the first choice and will be the man who United pursue in the summer, but Everton and Republic of Ireland star Seamus Coleman remains an option as they look to bolster at right back.

Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund)

A player long linked with a move to Old Trafford is Borussia Dortmund central defender Mats Hummels, but the struggles of the Bundesliga club make a swift departure for the German international increasingly likely. United have been less convincing at the back this season, on account of both inexperience and a succession of unfortunate injuries, and Hummels is the man identified to step in and rectify that particular issue.

Kevin Strootman (AS Roma)

AS Roma admitted this week that they would listen to any “huge” offers for Netherlands international midfielder Kevin Strootman, who is just getting back up to full speed after a lengthy absence with injury, that also forced him out of the 2014 World Cup. A playmaker who van Gaal was a huge fan of during his time in charge of the Oranje, Strootman is seen as the deep-lying creative presence currently lacking at Old Trafford.
