Kevin Strootman – Roma

United were warned off Strootman, their long term target from AS Roma, once again this week with the Italian side’s president saying it would take a ridiculous amount of money to make them sell him.

However, United may do just that with van Gaal knowing they need a player of his ilk to control their performance from midfield.

Despite his attacking tendencies, Strootman has the ability to sit back and use his eye for an attacking space to shut off and prevent any potential opposition attacks.

He’d essentially be a younger, more continental Michael Carrick and we know how essential he was for the Red Devils during Sir Alex Ferguson’s reign.

Paul Pogba – Juventus

How United must wish they had somehow convinced the Frenchman to stay.

Pogba of course shows the naivety of a young man but his immense talent will surely make him the next great footballing superstar.

His deep lying midfielder position allows him to dictate the tempo of the side and become almost the beating heart of the XI. Pogtba’s delightful range of passing, skill, strength and knack for scoring both spectacular and important goals means he’s one of the world’s leading lights in the centre.

Morgan Schneiderlin – Southampton

His quietly dominating performance against United should be proof enough he’s exactly the muscular man in midfield they require if they want a Premier Leaguer hardened man already ready for action.

They would most likely have to fend off interest from a number of other Premier League sides but his dominating, aggressive but almost unnotives work in midfield would both ease the pressure on a brittle United defence and allow them to build from the back when establishing attacks.

Yohan Cabaye – Paris Saint-Germain

Out of favour and supposedly looking for a way out, Cabaye’s performances whilst at Newcastle United certainly caught the eye and would make him a top prospect for United to target if they fail in the hunt for their main targets.

His tough tackling and commanding presence in the middle was beautifully complimented by his marauding runs forward and goalscoring exploits when at the Magpies and his relative lack of gametime since leaving England would only add to his desire to hold down a starting position.

Daley Blind – Manchester United

United could have the player they need already in one Daley Blind, but have so far neglected to use him in a midfield role, instead farming him out to the wing back position or as one of the three in van Gaal’s continually failing 3-5-2.

However, if the Dutch boss played his countryman in the accustomed midfield position he played at Ajax then perhaps United wouldn’t need to spend an excessive transfer fee and essentially waste money.
