Paul Merson thinks this side missed a trick with the former Tottenham man

The former Spurs man left the MLS club for Sunderland on a three and a half year contract with Black Cats forward Jozy Altidore heading in the opposite direction.

Defoe was tipped to move to QPR and reunite with Harry Redknapp who he has had numerous successes with during his career but the West London club appeared not to make a move for the 32 year old.

And Merson believes QPR will rue not targeting the former England international and that he will be a big hit on his return to the Premier League.

“[QPR] can’t keep relying on Charlie Austin all season,” the Sky Sports pundit said to the Daily Star. “If he carries on at the rate he’s going in that team, he’ll be England captain by the end of the year.

“I think Defoe would have been perfect for them. They say it’s an expensive deal, but sometimes you have to take a chance.

“With even more Premier League TV money next season, this is a bad time to get relegated. Spending a few million now on Defoe has got to be worth it.”

He added: “It’s not even a gamble. He’s a proven Premier League goalscorer. It’s not like you’re risking big money on someone who’s never played here.”
