Comparing Arsenal’s Invincibles To Current XI, As Theo Walcott Claims His Outfit Is Superior!

It was a big claim from the Emirates ace…

Arsenal forward Theo Walcott believes that the current Gunners attack is better than when players such as Thierry Henry, Robert Pires, and Dennis Bergkamp were strutting their stuff for the North London club.

So just how much of a point does he have…? Let’s take a look.

Goalkeeper

The current Gunners side has both Wojciech Szczesny and David Ospina fighting for the number one jersey, but neither can match up to Jens Lehmann. The eccentric keeper may have made the odd mistake, but on the whole the German was one of the best stoppers in the top flight.

Defence

Defence is an area in which the North London club have definitely regressed since the time of the invincibles. Ashley Cole, Lauren, Kolo Toure, and Sol Campbell made a daunting back line for Arsene Wenger, and only conceded 26 times in the entire Premier League season. The current lot pale in comparison, having already let in 25 by only January.

Midfield

The likes of Patrick Vieira and Gilberto Silva have never really been replaced by Arsenal, and as such their midfield has become more porous than it used to be. However, it is arguable that they are better going forward in 2015, with players such as Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla lending more creativity in the final third. So a draw in the middle of the park.

Attack

Sorry Theo, but there is no way that the current attackers are as good as the Invincibles. Thierry Henry was better than any single player that is now playing for the Gunners, and Robert Pires added some guile to the forward play. The genius of Dennis Bergkamp is also unmatched in the crop of players at the Emirates these days.

So, on the whole Walcott would seem to have been making some claims that he can’t quite back up. Arsenal may have to be challenging for the Premier League again before they can start comparing themselves to the ‘Invincibles’.
