The Dutchman is not keen to take his side to play a great number of games on both coasts of America again as he did in the build-up to this season, with long flights and too many fixtures seemingly a bit much for his players – as judged by their stuttering start to this season.

Van Gaal believes the difficult schedule may have affected his side’s ability to find consistency in the Premier League and put in a stronger title challenge, and doesn’t want to make the same mistakes next season.

Still, with around £2m to be made from the publicity of playing big games abroad, it remains to be seen if van Gaal will be granted his wish as the club look to cash in on their popularity around the globe.

United played Real Madrid in a packed friendly in pre-season this term, with the crowd of 109,318 a record attendance for a soccer match in the US.
