Press Association journalist Simon Peach has tweeted that the Blues forward plans to appeal the charge he received for an alleged stamp on Emre Can during the League Cup semi-final at Stamford Bridge, a decision which Peach says will be fully supported by Chelsea.

Costa risks increasing the ban if it’s deemed frivolous by the FA which seems likely and a three game ban could just as easily become four.

The Spanish international will find out his fate on Friday but is set to miss Chelsea’s crucial match against Manchester City and will leave Jose Mourinho with an even bigger selection headache with Cesc Fabregas and Filipe Luis set to also miss out through injury.

The Blues will attempt to increase their five point gap over Manuel Pellegrini’s side to eight with a win at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
