Torres pounced to get the winner in the closing moments

The Spaniard was a Chelsea hero as the striker scored a stoppage-time winner for the Blues – well and truly making up for his earlier howler of a miss.

Sergio Augero pulled Manchester City back into the game with a powerful left-footed rocket after Andre Schurrle’s opener, but Fernando Torres pounced when a mix-up between keeper Joe Hart and defender Matija Nastasic allowed the forward to send the ball into the back of the net in the dying moments of the game.

The Blues got the double over City that season.

The John Terry and Wayne Bridge scandal

There was great controversy before kick-off when news that John Terry had an affair with former Chelsea team-mate Wayne Bridge’s girlfriend was revealed by the media. Bridge subsequently refused to shake the hand of the captain.

Frank Lampard gave the Blues the lead just before the half-time break, but a stoppage time equaliser in the first-half sent the sides into the dressing-rooms 1-1.

The second-half was one to forget for Chelsea – Carlo Ancelotti’s side had two players sent off and City were ruthless in front of goal to secure a 4-2 victory.

This was the Italian’s first home-defeat of the season.

Avram Grant led Chelsea to a huge win over Manchester City

Jose Mourinho had made a controversial exit from Chelsea in the previous month, yet the 6-0 thrashing over City showed that the Blues could bounce back.

Frank Lampard provided two excellent assists for the first two goals with Michael Essien, Didier Drogba, Joe Cole, Salomon Kalou and Andriy Shevchenko all getting on the score-sheet.

Both Sven-Goran Eriksson, City manager, and Avram Grant, Chelsea boss, left their positions at the end of the campaign.

John Terry netted Chelsea’s second goal in a 5-0 romp

This was the Citizens’ first-season back in the top-flight, and the trip to Stamford Bridge proved just how difficult adapting to the Premier League would be.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Gianfranco Zola combined expertly for the Blues’ first goal, and a young John Terry grabbed the second. The goals were to continue to fly in with Mario Stanic, Frank Lampard and William Gallas all scoring.

For the second-time ever Chelsea secured Champions League football by finishing in third – and the rest is history.
