The 83-year-old, who was quoted by the Sun, expressed his belief that Frank Lampard deserves that title instead. He said: “I met then West Ham chairman Terry Brown at a Premier League meeting and asked him how much he wanted for Frank.

“I then did a deal at £9m. By the time it was all completed it had risen to £11m. Don’t ask me why… But It’s still the best £11m Chelsea have ever spent. Sure, he struggled at first because Chelsea played a faster game.

“I will always remember the speech he gave when he accepted the Football Writers’ Footballer of the Year award. He did it without a note. I don’t think any other player could have done that.”
