GK – David De Gea – 6/10

Didn’t have a spectacularly busy evening, but helped avoided a nightmare start by covering his angles well for Cambridge’s opening chance that hit the post.

RB – Patrick McNair – 7/10

Put in an excellent performance, supporting Rooney well on the wing, unafraid of getting a cross or shot in.

CB – Chris Smalling – 7/10

A leader in defence and pushed his side forward.

CB – Jonny Evans – 6/10

Found the high-ball difficult at times, but never truly tested.

LB – Marcos Rojo – 7/10

A nightmare for Cambridge down the left-wing, netted his first goal for the club.

RM – Wayne Rooney – 6/10

Did the job that was required on the right side in midfield, but there was nothing spectacular about the performance.

CM – Daley Blind – 7/10

Could have got the Red Devils off to a disastrous start after his error led to Cambridge hitting the post but recovered well, and helped control the midfield.

LM – Angel Di Maria – 8/10

Showed the League Two outfit what money can buy you by sublimely dribbling and passing around Cambridge for fun.

AM – Juan Mata – 9/10

Got his side rolling with the first goal to help ease any nerves.

RF – Robin van Persie – 7/10

Played a delicious ball to Rojo for the defender’s first club goal, yet should be disappointed not to have got on the scoresheet.

LF – Marouane Fellaini – 8/10

Played high on the left, winning high-balls and laying off to team-mates with ease. Set up the first goal.
