The news that Manchester United are interested in Mats Hummels will not come as much of a surprise, following intense speculation that the Red Devils have agreed a deal to sign him in the Metro.

The signings of Godin and Hummels will no doubt go a long way to shoring up the back-line at Old Trafford, which has been the subject of much criticism.

Since Sir Alex Ferguson’s resignation, the North West side have lost Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, and Patrice Evra; all key players to their title winning back four. Looking at the talent which has either left, or aged, it is hardly a surprise that there are such well documented defensive problems for Louis van Gaal.

Angel di Maria joined the side from Real Madrid amid much fanfare in the summer, signing for a British record fee of £59.7 million. Despite enjoying a sparkling World Cup for national side Argentina, and being, for the main part, one of Real Madrid’s best players in the 2013-14 season, the playmaker has been unable to recapture this form at Old Trafford.

With much speculation that the Argentine could join PSG, reported by the Guardian, this deal looks a possibility in the summer as Manchester United look to cut their losses.
