BBC Sport says the midfield enforced has undergone knee surgery and is likely to be on the treatment table until the middle of the summer.

The 28-year-old got injured in the Ivory’s Coast’s second AFCON game and has not played since.

“He’s in Qatar and will stay there for a bit of recovery and then come back”, said Newcastle’s temporary boss John Carver.

“I would have thought [he’ll be out until the end of the season]”

It’s more bad news for a player who has seen his 2014-15 decimated by injury. He’s only managed 12 league games after missing the first six weeks of the campaign with a hamstring issue, and it now looks probable that he won’t add to that total.
