1) Diego Godin (Atletico Madrid)
Rock solid for Atletico Madrid in recent years, Diego Godin looks a good bet for a top club like Manchester City, who could surely sign him for around £30m in a move to vastly improve on the struggling Kompany.
2) Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid)
One of the best defenders in the world for much of the last decade, Real Madrid star Sergio Ramos has been linked with City in the past and is currently negotiating a new contract at the Bernabeu, sparking rumours he could move for around £40m – surely worth it?
3) Raphael Varane (Real Madrid)
Another Real Madrid defender who could be a good addition, Raphael Varane is a highly-rated young player linked strongly with the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal. The Frenchman has a bright future in the game and would be a superb long-term buy for City.
4) Laurent Koscielny (Arsenal)
A wildcard option, but City have a history of raiding players from Arsenal, and there’s no doubt the solid and consistent Laurent Koscielny could be an option worth considering for the Premier League champions.
5) Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund)
Strongly tipped to join rivals Manchester United in the summer, but Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels is surely someone City should be looking at after establishing himself as one of the best defenders in the world in recent times. The German World Cup winner could leave for around £35m, a bargain for a club like City.
