Savage heaped the praise on the 30-year-old, believing Williams to be one of the best defenders in the Premier League, who only last July committed his future to the Swans by signing a new three year contract.
“I’m surprised Ashley Williams is not playing for a top six side,” Savage told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“I think Ashley Williams is a leader, he’s good on the ball, defends the near post very well and wins headers,” he continued.
“I’ll be surprised if he’s there next year. Do I think he’ll be there next season? If I was a top club I would buy him.”
The Wales captain was the subject of a £4m bid from Sunderland last summer, before signing a new deal. While Arsenal and Liverpool have also expressed their interest in recent seasons, but such rumours have diminished.
Arsene Wenger must surely consider a serious move for the accomplished Premier League defender, particularly with Per Mertesacker continuing to put in unconvincing performances for the Gunners in central defence.
