The Metro reports that the Merseyside club are still following the progress of the Portuguese after being heavily linked with a deal for him in January.

The paper cites sources in Portugal and say the Reds sent a number of scouts to watch Carvalho in action last weekend during Sporting’s game with Porto.

However, the Portuguese has a release clause of £37.5 million and could turn out to be a very expensive acquisition with Arsenal also set to compete in any deal for his signature.

Although, the prospect of a deal for 22-year-old has been made easier in recent weeks after Sporting managed to acquire the full rights for Carvalho and a number of players in their first-team-squad.

The club had previously had to contend with numerous third parties when negotiating with potential buyers but have now acquired 100 per-cent ownership of key stars.

And this move benefits any interest from the Premier League with part-owned players prohibited from joining clubs.
