Arsenal have missed out on the signing of West Ham United defender Winston Reid, who has signed a new six-and-a-half year contract when he looked close to leaving the club on a free transfer in the summer.

Reid on a free would’ve been a great piece of business for the Gunners, but there are other potential bargains out there for Arsene Wenger to consider as he eyes improvements at the back…
1) Ron Vlaar (Aston Villa)
Another top Premier League defender, Ron Vlaar is out of contract with Aston Villa in the summer and would be another smart purchase by the Gunners to improve their defensive options.
2) Miranda (Atletico Madrid)
Out of favour with Atletico Madrid this season, the world class Miranda could surprisingly be available for a fairly generous £20m, which would be well worth paying going on his form last season.
3) Chris Smalling (Manchester United)
Possibly available for around £12m, Chris Smalling is not a regular at Manchester United, but Arsenal are known to be long-term admirers.
4) Fabian Schar (FC Basel)
Available for £10m, FC Basel defender Fabian Schar looks a good prospect at the age of 23, and has been linked several times with bigger clubs.
5) Samuel Umtiti (Lyon)
Linked today with Arsenal, promising Lyon youngster Samuel Umtiti is valued at around £8m, so would probably not cost much more to sign and looks a great player for the future.
