Les Merlus remain in the midst of a relegation battle although they currently sit just outside the drop zone. Sylvain Ripoli’s outfit find themselves in 17th place, having accrued 31 points from 28 matches.

They find themselves only two points ahead of 18th-place Toulouse and the threat of a drop to Ligue 2 hangs heavy over the heads of Lorient’s players.

“When we’re poorly placed [in the table], it’s difficult to free ourselves,” began Walid Mesloub, as reported by L’Equipe, “we have a little bit more pressure and it’s felt-perhaps-from an offensive point of view.”

Indeed, Lorient struggled to muster much of an attacking threat against Saint-Etienne, and while they were defensively resilient for much of the contest, they were ultimately undone by shots from Yohan Mollo [below] and then Max-Alain Gradel.
