Reports suggest the Welshman is one of three main targets for the Red Devils, who are in need of strengthening in a number of departments after an unconvincing season chasing fourth place.

United spent around £150m last summer, and if reports are to be believed, these are the names on their agenda for next year:

1) Gareth Bale (Real Madrid)

In an £80m move, United could raid Real Madrid to sign long-term target Gareth Bale, with the Wales international unhappy at the Bernabeu and lined up as an ideal replacement for unsettled star Angel Di Maria.

2) Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund)

With defence a priority for United, a further £30m could go on signing Borussia Dortmund centre-back Mats Hummels, who would be a superb addition to the team’s unsteady backline, though Arsenal have also been linked with the German.

3) Memphis Depay (PSV)

An exciting young winger, £20m-rated Memphis Depay impressed for the Netherlands at last summer’s World Cup and is another high priority for van Gaal who could improve on under-performers like Di Maria and Adnan Januzaj.
