Reports in the Daily Mirror confirm that the potential deal would make City the highest paid team in the world in terms of sponsorship, earning almost twice that of local rivals Manchester United.

In the list below, we could down the eight current leaders in shirt-sponsorship based on deals already in place, based on the latest numbers collated by the Daily Telegraph:

8) Liverpool (Standard Chartered, £20m)

Liverpool have certainly given their sponsors plenty of air time so far this season, playing in five different competitions!

7) Manchester City (Etihad Airways, £20m)

The shirt sponsorship makes up just a small proportion of the City-Etihad partnership, which looks set to continue to grow.

6) Barcelona (Qatar Airways, £25m)

The Spanish giants gave into the lure of shirt sponsorship a couple of years ago, and have reaped the benefits ever since.

5) Bayern Munich (Telekom, £25m)

It might not be entirely obvious what the giant ‘T’ actually stands for on the Munich shirt, and if you’ve ever wondered, now you know!

4) Real Madrid (Fly Emirates, £25m)

The European Champions unsurprisingly rate highly in this list. What you might find surprising, is who’s above them…

3) Arsenal (Fly Emirates, £30m)

Arsenal have the same sponsors as Madrid, but have been attached to the Emirates name for some time. It is the Emirates Stadium after all!

2) Chelsea (Samsung, £40m)

The Blues traditionally go deep into every competition they enter, and it’s no wonder sponsors are fighting to represent them.

1) Manchester United (Chevrolet, £52m)

This partnership only came into being at the start of the season, and Chevolet are no doubt delighted. Regardless of United’s performance on the pitch, their popularity off it never seems to waver.
