The 24-year-old pounced on a fluffed Luis Antonio Valencia pass back to David De Gea, going on to round the keeper and score.

Having only left Old Trafford in the summer this was especially painful for United fans to watch.

The manner of his departure will have made it worse, with his replacement Radamel Falcao proving to be a flop in since joining the club on a season long loan spell from AS Monaco.

In reaction to this a string of shocking comments were directed at the England international on twitter, including several death threats. Examples include: “Danny Welbeck I will find you and I will kill you.”

“Hey Welbeck, when you die, I will celebrate it in front of your family.”

“Hope welbeck breaks his f****** leg and can’t play ever again f****** judas c***.”

“Somebody just KILL Welbeck! Can’t stand the a******! #RedOrDead#MUFC.”

It is unknown whether the police will look in to these threats.
